Paint a Celebrity Artist each Week

with Instructor Judy Takács

June 14th through July 26th, 2012

at the lovely BAYarts campus

28795 Lake Road

Bay Village, Ohio

Intermediate to Advanced Students

Judy demonstrated ways in which she achieves the painterly realism of her portraits.  Over the course of this six week class, students completed a painting of three, local celebrity artists that Judy invited to participate.  Each of these artists not only modeled for the class, but brought a few pieces of their art to share with the students.  This was a great opportunity to meet new artists, see their work and, in turn, see how this information inspires your paintings.

Opening Friday August 10th, we celebrated the completion of this artistic adventure with a Gallery Show in our Education Gallery.  BAYarts highlighted each artist/model and their art as it is flanked by portraits created by Judy Takács and selected student work from this lively class.  This was a great course for both emerging and established artists.

During the course of the class, a facebook group was established so students could see Judy’s work on the paintings she began as demos in class. Similarly, students could put up work to have it critiqued during the week…during the week the learning didn’t have to stop.  This is characteristic of Judy’s teaching style. It is highly personal and she continues to be a helpful friend and resource even after the class is over.

A little bit about the celebrity artist models who posed for this innovative win win class:

Artist Dino Massaroni posed on

July 5 and July 12

Dino is a portrait painter whose lifelike paintings breathe with a natural realism. His portraits hold places of honor in the collections of the Butler Institute of American Art, University of Akron School of Law, and many other private and corporate collections.

Dino teaches at the Cuyahoga Valley Art Center, Orange Art Center and holds travel workshops in exotic locations like Italy and Greece.

Dino, with his charming easy manner, was a true pleasure to paint and his art a treat to see.

Artist Rob Crombie modeled on
June 14 and June 21

“Perhaps what is most effective is Crombie's treatment of the paintings surface.  His brushwork and drawing bring the paintings to life.  His patterns of agitated brush marks are descriptive and in the same instance they give the paintings an abstract quality.  He captures psychologically his subject, be it nature or the back of a house.”

a quote in the Plain Dealer Sunday Magazine from Saul Ostrow, Dean of Visual Arts and Technologies and Chair of Painting at Cleveland Institute of Art

Rob’s energy is apparent in his paintings and his personality. He was a joy to paint.

Artist Arabella Proffer modeled on
July 19 and July 26

Araballa Proffer is a painter, designer and author of the fictitious portrait book, "The National Portrait Gallery of Kessa". This book is a fascinating fiction where she embellishes her precisely painted invented ladies with histories that would curl your hair. Below is an excerpt describing Elizabetta the II, one of Arabella’s many characters.

"…her presentation at court paid off, in the form of Henrik, the Deputy and Lord Chamberlain who proposed days later. This was treated more as a business transaction than romantic gesture; Elizabetta was held in near captivity at Henrik's country estate with only her newly acquired and indomitable mother-in-law for company. Bound by rules, duty and social codes that were still new to her, her mother-in-law set out to make the young lady worthy of her son's position. The tedious and often cruel "lessons" her mother-in-law imposed helped Elizabetta to grow a thick skin and bloom into a grand dame in her own right…”check out Arabella’s

Arabella and her sense of the theatrical, along with her exotic presence made for some stunning portraits!

An intermediate three day oil painting portraiture workshop with generous doses of “how to” as well as “why to”. I introduced my students to inspiring work of artists I admire by setting up an “Inspiration Station”, handed out and spoke about my motivational tips called, “Judyisms”, and gave a fully narrated and

lively painting demonstrated each morning. The

afternoons were for the students to paint the same

model. By giving lots of personal attention,

tips and tricks as well as encouragement,

I tried to keep the energy level high and positive

in this workshop that was for me,

a blast…and I think for the students too.

Jeanne Tiefenbach brought her friend, Don, to the

Happy to say that the friendship blossomed and I had the privilege of attending their beautiful musical wedding in early 2013.

And Kate, shown here with a dynamic start to her painting of Rob Crombie, was unable to attend the opening because she was in Ireland…getting engaged to the love of HER life!

Proof of excessive amounts of fun being had…between the intensive learning of course.

Oil Painting the
Figure and Face with Personality and Grace

with Instructor Judy Takács

BAYarts

Bay Village, Ohio

Saturday, August 24th and Sunday August 25th

A companion workshop for Judy’s epic art project, Chicks with Balls.

This two-day oil painting workshop was taught by

the dynamic Judy Takács, whose larger than

life realistic portraits have captured public attention in Northeast Ohio. Her workshop runs concurrently at BAYarts with her large scope figure painting show, Chicks with Balls.

This unique workshop stressed gesture and expression of the nude human form using a live model, along with focusing on the portrait aspect of figure painting.

Judy Takács demonstrations and workshops have generous doses of  “how to” as well as “why to”.  After the workshop, she continued many of the friendships she has made with attendees through facebook and continued interaction in the Northeast Ohio art world. In other words, there is personal attention for those who seek it from this energetic and caring instructor.

And, her inspiring figurative show, Chicks with Balls, recognizing unsung female heroes, will be on exhibit right downstairs from the studio, so during lunch at Mojos café downstairs and on breaks, students can immerse themselves in these figurative portraits where the female form is captured with personality and grace.

Workshop Schedule:

Morning Day One began with a quick and lively demonstration of spontaneous gestural oil sketches on paper by Judy Takács, after which the students did the same.

Afternoon Day One the longer pose started which the students painted for the remainder of the workshop. Judy demonstrated her process for how to start this long pose on canvas, then the students painted.

Day Two  students continued on the long pose on canvas. Judy Takács demonstrated the progression to color during the day to lead the students into the final stages of this longer painting.

Judy Takács was awarded an
Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Award for 2013.

Loren Naji

Thrilled to report we have booked celebrity model, Loren Naji, to pose for the first two weeks of the course.

Loren creates iconic spherical sculptures as well as amazing abstracts that consistently push the envelope.

Loren has also been in the news lately for the legendary opening receptions he hosts at his Ohio City Loren Naji Gallery. Police raids and trouble with city beaurocracy have put him in the spotlight as a poster child and champion of Cleveland Artists who spearhead community revitalization.

Joe Ayala

And I’m proud to announce that artist Joe Ayala has agreed to be our celebrity model artist for the second two weeks of class. Joe Ayala’s work is currently on view at the Hedge Gallery at the 78th Street Studios as part of an epic two artist figurative exhibit with John Carlson called, “It Figures”.

Joe’s work draws inspiration and beautifully combines classical portraiture, editorial illustration, and modern cultural themes with a strong sense of drawing, realism and drama.

We had an exciting line-up of Celebrity Artist Models. I chose to feature celebrity artists Diane Fleisch Hughes and Milan Kecman because I am honored to be part of a group portrait show with them, along with Lou Grasso and Billy Ritter at Tri-C Gallery West, in October 2015.

Diane Fleisch Hughes

Diane Fleisch Hughes is a figurative painter, whose sensitive and organic use of line is reminiscent of Egon Scheile and whose expressive figures remind me of Toulouse Lautrec. She uses color for expression and mood, but it’s always the line and the drawing quality that creates the powerful substructure of her work.

Fascinated by how powerful art can be and how it can heal too, Diane Fleisch Hughes is currently attending graduate school to obtain a Masters Degree in Art Therapy and Counseling.

Charcoal and Oil on Canvas

Milan Kecman

Milan Kecman has had a long and successful career as an illustrator, locally and nationally. His work has been published in the Society of Illustrators Annuals more times than I can count, and I’ve been seeing it there since my early training days in the 1980s.

In past years he has turned his attention to fine art and painting, winning awards and exhibiting all over Northeast Ohio. Most recently, Milan Kecman exhibited at BAYarts, with a solo show, “Head 2 Head.”   Show runs through July 31st.

Of this thought-provoking body of work, Milan says,

“Always having an interest in history, I decided to explore some of the faces and personalities of the past and the parallels their lives took. Their lives at times touched, as they took divergent or similar paths. I hope to give the viewer insight into some historical figures who have left a profound effect upon today's culture."

Portraits in Oil: Capturing Character in Life and Photography

This four day Intensive course, took place at the lovely BAYarts campus in June of 2016

BAYarts

28795 Lake Road

Bay Village, Ohio

Intermediate to Advanced level
High School and College students welcome

Award-winning portrait artist, Judy Takács demonstrated how she achieves the painterly realism and character her portraits are known for. Over the course of this intensive four-day class, attendees painted portraits of two very different and fascinating models using Takács’ innovative approach, where she begins an oil portrait from life and finishes from photographs she has taken during the posing session…all the while, maintaining the freshness and spontaneity of a painting from life.

During the course of the class, students were invited to join the facebook group, Ohio Artists Posting a Painting a Day so they can share progress on their paintings after class is over as well as to see Judy’s work on the paintings she began as demos in class.
